Possibly the trickiest aspect of my job as a freelance writer is actually managing my time efficiently. I would estimate that around 70% of my work time is spent on my freelance writing work and the remaining 30% is split between dealing with quotes and inquiries and taking care of administrative tasks such as handling payments and chasing up invoices.

When I took up freelance writing as a new career some years back, I never considered that such a large chunk of my work time would be taken up by anything other than freelance writing. I certainly did not envisage so much time being spent dealing with administrative tasks.

So this week I am going to try something new, I am going to set a 50 minute timer each hour, during these 50 minutes I will only write, I won’t check my email, or any other external function that is part of by freelance writing business. The remaining 10 minutes each hour I will give over to admin and customer communication. Just an experiment, to see how it works out.

I have been thinking lately that for freelance writers such as me, who specialise in creating website content and other forms of freelance writing to be used on-line, are extremely lucky to be serving an exponentially growing market.

This huge market has massive amounts of room for other writers to jump in and get a slice of the pie, and I am sure there are many new writers out there who would love to take a crack at supplying the demanding needs of website owners and internet marketers.

SO I have decided to develop a freelance writer mentoring programme, where I will guide new writers through the subtly different aspect of writing for the on-line market. I will spend the next couple of months putting a strategy together, which will be designed to take a new freelance writer from the infant stages of securing their first website content project, through to advanced topics such as writing for an interactive audience.

Following the complete mess that 1and1 recently made of an update to their Microsoft Exchange Server, is it now time to be afraid once again? I received an information email from 1and1 yesterday which explained that the Microsoft Exchange Server which my account is hosted on is going to be upgraded from the 2003 version to the 2007 version.

I am fully expecting several days of lost email, as 1and1 have proven time and time again that they just do not have the ability to administer this service professionally. I will not be renewing my subscription when it expires in a few months time, I will look for a new Microsoft Exchange provider.

Next week I have a visa run to Cambodia planned, and then Nuth, Leon and myself pile into the sarleng for a seven day road trip to Koh Phangan. One of the things I love about being a freelance writer is that I have the freedom to do things like this whenever I please.

Whenever we do something like this it is always hard to be productive, usually after riding our three wheel scooter come shopping trolley for a few hours in the blistering sun, I’m pretty tired. This time around I have planned my work schedule much better, and only have around three hours work per day on the books for the entire three weeks we are travelling.

Of course, I know what will happen, all of my regular clients will suddenly throw tons of urgent work at me and I’ll be forced to burn the midnight oil once again on the journey.

It has been quite a month for me this month, firstly I have just completed some work for a particularly prestigious client, I have been writing press releases and articles for notorious art collector Charles Saatchi, and his new Gallery that is opening in Chelsea next month. The new Saatchi Gallery will house one of the most world renowned collections of contemporary art. Secondly I am now fully booked with work for the next six weeks, apart from the little time I have set aside for my repeat clients, as I do not wish to turn any of them away.

So I really must be doing something right I guess, although its been a long haul getting the ball rolling, it has taken me over a year to get to this stage, but I think it has all been worth it when I see where I am today. So a big thanks to all my clients who have helped me so much over the last few months, many of you have been extremely supportive and helpful.

If any of my clients are reading this, then please be aware of the fact that I currently have no email access, due to a problem with my mail host botching an exchange server update.

This is a huge issue for me, I rely completely on my Microsoft Exchange account to organise my entire working life including email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. I figured paying for a premium service would guarantee I had access to a robust solution, but it seems I was wrong.

If you have recently sent me an email which requires action, or are waiting for an email from me, then things are looking grim at the moment, it has been fifteen hours so far and they have still not fixed the problem, the current response they are giving is that they are aware that there is an issue, and their engineers are working on it.

As a freelance writer, it can often be difficult to gauge the integrity of new clients. The problem arises from the fact that I often find myself working for people who are on the other side of the globe, this makes chasing a bad debt impossible.

Recently, following a spate of dealings with blatantly crooked customers, who had placed orders, accepted delivery and then promptly disappeared without a trace, I have begun to insist that all of my clients use an escrow service to handle project funding.

Escrow is a great way to protect both the buyer and the provider. By using an escrow service, the buyer is no longer required to make any advance payment, which could theoretically be lost. For me, the main advantage lays in the fact I know for sure the project funds are available and ready to be released to me once the project is completed. All in all a much safer situation for everyone involved.

I’ve been picking up more and more work lately as a paid guest blogger. At first I was concerned about this phenomenon, as most of my writing is usually anonymous and attributed to somebody else. As a guest blogger I am open to public criticism through comments on my posts made by the blog visitors. Quite often the project brief will include responding to comments made about my posts on the blog site, which means I are actively discussing my work with the general public.

I have discovered I really enjoy this aspect of working for blog sites, I am also really having fun with the fact I am expected to write opinionated copy, which is designed to solicit a response from the readers. Several of the blogs I am a guest poster at have actually asked me to be controversial bordering on antagonistic and this is great fun.

As the world wide web fills up with more and more blogs, I am looking forward to working on more of these fun projects.

One of the tasks I often have to undertake as a freelance writer, is editing work already produced by somebody else. This can actually be quite a fun task and it allows you to take a critical look at the writing style of the original author, quite often in the past I have assimilated concepts gleaned from my editing tasks into my own writing style.

The downside of an editing job is that it is very hard to price, at one end of the scale are the simple jobs which involve correcting grammatical mistakes and spelling errors, these types of projects are great. At the nasty end of the scale are the projects which require huge amounts of re-writing of the original copy, these can often be more time consuming than writing the pie\e from scratch would.

It can be really hard to gauge which type of editing is required from a project brief, it can really be an "open the can and take a look" kind of deal, sometimes the contents are tasty, at other times you wish you could put the lid back on.

I face many challenges each day in my job as a freelance writer, one in particular used to be quite difficult to overcome. Many of my clients are based in the United States, and as such they require all of the copy I deliver to be written using American English.

As a UK native, this used to be a problem for me, there are many differences between UK English and American English, spelling and grammar are the two most obvious, but it goes deeper than this, tun of phrase, slang, sentence structure, all of these things are quite different.

I have gotten quite good at writing in the American style over the years, but recently I have been having the reverse problem. I am writing more and more for the American audience, so much so that when I am writing for my UK clients, I find myself using the American style. It is very odd to find this happening, and quite surprising in it’s own way.
